Hideki Matsuyama will be determined to become the first Asian golfer to win the
Valero Texas Open when he tees off this week.
What to know about Matsuyama
The Japanese superstar turned professional in 2013, having reached number one in the World Amateur Golf Ranking in August 2012.
Matsuyama has 20 worldwide wins, an Olympic bronze medal, ten career top-10 finishes in major championships, and six Presidents Cup appearances.

The accomplished golfer has been inactive since he took part in 2025 The Players Championship in Florida, USA, where he missed the cut.
Matsuyama is currently placed sixth on the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR), and his best overall ranking is second place.
Why Matsuyama is one of the favourites
The former Tohoku Fukushi University student won The Sentry, three strokes ahead of Collin Morikawa, winning the first tournament of the 2025 PGA Tour season.
Matsuyama, who has won 11 PGA Tour events to date, including the Masters Tournament in 2021, has what it takes to win this weekend's tournament.

“I feel like things are coming together and heading in the right direction, but it all really comes down to once the tee is in the ground and how quickly I can get those feelings out on the course,” said Matsuyama on the PGA Tour website.
“It is tough here. The rough is long and there’s a lot of water out there, which makes scoring difficult. Make sure I play well the first three days and put myself in a position to win on Sunday.”
