Liverpool are flying high ahead of their trip to Crystal Palace as the first edition of Monday Night Football for the season rolls around in the
English Premier League.
Former Liverpool boss Roy Hodgson is in his first full season in charge at Crystal Palace.
They started their season with a much needed victory in the first London derby of the campaign as goals from Jeffrey Schlupp and Wilfried Zaha secured all three points away to newly-promoted Fulham. Zaha, who recently signed a new deal with the Eagles which will keep him at Selhurst Park until the summer of 2023, had an unsuccessful stint with Manchester United in David Moyes’ ill-fated tenure but since returning to his boyhood club has come on leaps and bounds.
The 25-year-old will be looking to improve on his best-ever goals tally of nine from last season starting against Liverpool on Monday.
The Reds had their best start to the season in 24 years when they romped West Ham United 4-0 at Anfield on opening day. Last season’s Golden Boot winner Mohamed Salah took little time to get off the mark in 2018/19 before a brace from Senegalese forward Sadio Mane stole the show.
Daniel Sturridge came off the bench to score with his first touch to show manger Jurgen Klopp that he now has even more options available at his disposal, granted the England striker can maintain some level of fitness.
Following Monday’s clash with Crystal Palace, Liverpool face a potentially tricky fixture list with matches against Brighton and Leicester City before facing Tottenham, Chelsea and Manchester City in three of the four fixtures after the international break.
Selhurst Park has not been a happy hunting ground for the men from Merseyside. Reds fans will still have bitter memories from the night in May 2014 dubbed ‘Crystanbul’ when Liverpool, under Brandan Rodgers, let a three-goal lead slip in the space of eight gruelling minutes, conceding the title to Manchester City in the process. Since then, they have won four and lost four of the eight Premier League matches played between them.
Crystal Palace have won just one of their last five against Liverpool, in April 2017, when former Reds frontman Christian Benteke returned to Anfield to haunt his former club, scoring twice in a 2-1 win. The corresponding fixture last season ended 2-1 to the visitors with both Salah and Mane on the scoresheet in the second half after Luka Milavojevic had given the home side the lead from the penalty spot in the 13
th minute.
