Torino v Atalanta
‪2021-22 Serie A
Matchday 1
21 August 2021
Stadio Olimpico Grande Torino, Turin

Torino and Atalanta are set for an opening-night thriller in Italy’s top flight, slated for the Stadio Olimpico Grande Torino on Friday 21 August. The match is one of 10 spread across 21-23 August in the first Matchday of the ‪2021-22Serie A season.

Torino endured a tough ‪2020-21 season in Serie A, finishing in 17th place – just one position and four points clear of the relegation zone. Il Toro will be aiming to end in a more comfortable mid-table region this term.

“I’m happy that things went better than expected in our pre-season,” said manager Ivan Juric, who has had to cope with the constant speculation over star attacker Andrea Belotti, who impressed for Italy at Euro 2020 and was wanted by heavyweights such as champions Internazionale.

Atalanta continue to be Serie A’s ‘fairytale’ club: on a meagre budget and without any household names, they continue to play attacking and entertaining football and haul in impressive results throughout.

Last term they finished third on the log – ahead of Juventus, Napoli, Lazio and Roma, all clubs with far bigger budgets – were the league’s top scorers with 90 goals. Keeping up that level of excellence will be tough, but manager Gian Piero Gasperini is looking forward to the new season.

“We are a bit late [in our preparations], as soon as we recover a bit, we can all do well,” said La Dea’s boss. “We are a close-knit group and this will be our approach for the season.”

In head-to-head stats, Torino and Atalanta have met in 40 matches across all competitions since 1994. La Dea have claimed 15 wins compared to 13 for Il Toro, while 12 games have been drawn.

The teams’ two league meetings last season produced no less than 12 goals: a 4-2 win for Atalanta in Turin in September 2020 and a 3-3 draw in Bergamo in February 2021. Andrea Belotti scored three goals across the two games for Il Toro.
