Max Verstappen and Red Bull Racing will aim to upset Mercedes’ ‘Silver Arrows’ at the Formula 1 Bahrain Grand Prix on Sunday, 31 March 2019.
Verstappen was the ‘best of the rest’ at the season-opening Australian Grand Prix earlier this month, coming home in third place behind the Mercedes duo of Valtteri Bottas and Lewis Hamilton, who enjoyed a clear pace advantage over the rest of the field.
The Dutchman’s podium was secured thanks to a fine overtaking move on Sebastian Vettel, with Red Bull – now running Honda engines – enjoying greater outright pace and seemingly able to compete with the two factory powerhouses (Ferrari and Mercedes) on a more even footing.
While Verstappen was excellent, Red Bull will hope Pierre Gasly can improve his performance after only managing an 11th place finish at Melbourne. The Frenchman’s hopes were hit by ill fortune in qualifying, and Bahrain represents a clean slate for him to prove that he is worthy of one of the top drives in the field.
Mercedes will be confident of continuing their pace advantage, while Ferrari have traditionally been strong at Bahrain, leaving Red Bull in need of Verstappen’s skill and bravery to keep in the contest for honours at the front of the grid.
