UEFA Champions League: PSG, Real Madrid set for heavyweight battle

Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid will open Group A in the UEFA Champions League with a heavyweight battle at Parc des Princes on Wednesday 18 September 2019. The match is one of 16 across the continent of Europe, as part of Matchday 1 this midweek.



PSG come into the game on the back of three successive wins in Ligue 1, the latest of which saw a 1-0 triumph at home to Strasbourg this past weekend. Neymar scored the goal in that match for the Parisians, but is suspended for this continental clash.

Real returned to winning form in La Liga this past Saturday with a hard-fought 3-2 home win over Levante. Los Blancos’ goals were scored by Karim Benzema and Casemiro, easing the pressure on manager Zinedine Zidane.



In head-to-head stats, PSG and Real have met in eight matches. Los Blancos have claimed four wins compared to two for the French side, while two games have been drawn.

The teams last met over two legs in the last 16 of the 2017/18 Champions League, with the Spanish giants winning 5-2 on aggregate.
