Liverpool will look to establish a first-leg advantage when they host Porto in the first game of their 2018/19 UEFA Champions League quarterfinal on Tuesday 9 April at Anfield, kick-off at 20h00.
‘Pool advanced into the last eight of the continental competition in grand style, defeating Bayern Munich 3-1 in Germany last month, thanks to a brace from Sadio Mane and a towering header from Virgil van Dijk.
The Reds are balancing their Champions League push with a stressful Premier League title bid, in which they are battling with Manchester City for domestic honours.
Porto’s progression into the quarterfinals was a dramatic one: they lost their first leg of their last 16 match-up 2-1 away to Roma, but turned the tie in the favour at Estadio Do Dragao: goals from Tiquinho and Moussa Marega made it 2-1 on the night and 3-3 on aggregate after 90 minutes.
An extra 30 minutes then saw the Portuguese giants score a decisive third goal – Alex Telles converted a penalty – to see them win 3-1 after extra time and 4-3 overall.
Liverpool and Porto have met in six previous European matches, with the English side boasting an unbeaten record (three wins, three draws). The Reds defeated the Dragons 5-0 on aggregate in the last 16 of the Champions League last season.
The return game will be played at Estadio Do Dragao on Wednesday 17 April.
