Round of 16

st
Kick-off at 19:45 (7:45pm) GMT
Former Blues midfielder Frank Lampard, now in charge of
Championship club Derby County, will see his side take to the Stamford Bridge pitch on Tuesday as he looks to add another major win to his growing list of achievements after managing to slay former boss Jose Mourinho’s Manchester United at Old Trafford in the previous round of the Carabao Cup.
Chelsea head into Tuesday’s clash of the back of consecutive victories in the UEFA Europa League and English Premier League respectively since they salvaged a 2-2 draw in stoppage time at home against Manchester United last weekend. Maurizio Sarri’s men are unbeaten this season, in 14 matches across all competitions, after losing the curtain-raising Community Shield to Manchester City in August. Ruben Loftus-Cheek followed up his midweek hat-trick against BATE Borisov with a goal against Burnley on the weekend and could be recalled to the starting line-up for the visit of Derby.

The Rams have had a solid start to life in 2018/19 as their new head coach still finds his feet. Lampard’s side sit sixth in England’s second tier after seven wins from their opening 15 encounters in the division, just four points adrift of early leaders Sheffield United. Derby head into their Carabao Cup round of 16 tie in great form, having suffered just one defeat in their last nine matches which included a penalty shootout success over United after a dramatic 2-2 draw during regulation time.

The pair have met a total of 106 times in the past, with very little to separate the two teams. Derby County dominated the early exchanges between the duo before the Blues bounced back in the early eighties, losing just three of their last 23 matches against their East Midlands opponents with Chelsea’s last home defeat against Derby coming way back in February 1983.

One-time FA Cup winners Derby County have the unwanted record of being the worst-ever team to grace a Premier League campaign, during their dismal display in 07-08 when they amassed as grand total of just 11 points. Their trip to Stamford Bridge that season ended in a 6-1 thrashing to hosts Chelsea, when yep, you guessed it – Frank Lampard scored four times.
Chelsea are looking to lift the League Cup for the first time since the 2014-15 season. During that run, they faced this week’s opponents in the quarter-finals – the last meeting between the two - when a 3-1 win at Pride Park dumped out Derby County after Eden Hazard had opened the scoring in the first half. The Belgian midfielder missed the Blues last two matches through injury and, with eight goals to his name already this season, could play a part once again on Tuesday.
