Atletico Madrid will chase a win over Mallorca when the teams meet in the weekend’s opening La Liga clash, set for Estadio Wanda Metropolitano on Friday 3 July 2020, kick-off at 21:00 CAT. The match is one of 10 spread across 3-6 July as part of
La Liga’s Round 34 action.
Atletico come into the clash on the back of a battling 2-2 draw away to Barcelona on Tuesday night, as the Rojiblancos twice came from behind thanks to a brace of penalties from Saul. They remain well placed in third on the log.
"They were on the ball and played in our half of the pitch, but every time we counter-attacked, we were dangerous... In the end, we drew a tough match. We played well against a great team,” said manager Diego Simeone, who will be looking to secure Champions League football for next season.
Mallorca, meanwhile, picked up their first win since the restart by emphatically crushing Celta Vigo 5-1 at home on Tuesday night. Ante Budimir (two), Cucho, Alejandro Pozo and Salva Sevilla all netted as the island club boosted their survival hopes.
“We are still down, it is true, but we have reduced the distance (to safety) to five points and we have in our favour the particular difference. We are better but without forgetting that we continue to occupy relegation positions,” said manager Vicente Moreno.
In head-to-head stats, Atletico and Mallorca have met in 29 matches across all competitions. The Madrid side has claimed 11 wins compared to nine for the island club, while nine games have been drawn.
When the teams met in La Liga earlier this season, Atletico claimed a 2-0 win at Iberostar Estadi in September 2019 thanks to goals from Diego Costa and Joao Felix.
