Barcelona will open the defence of their La Liga title when they face Athletic Bilbao at San Mames Barria in the opening match of the 2019/20 season, set for Friday 16 August, kick-off at 20:00.
Barca cruised to the title last season and will be eager to get off to a flyer this campaign, with manager Ernesto Valverde targeting more success with the Blaugrana.
And Barcelona certainly strengthened their squad in the off-season, adding the likes of Antoine Griezmann (Atletico Madrid) and Frenkie de Jong (AFC Ajax) to bolster a squad which should now be capable of competing strongly both on the domestic front and in the UEFA Champions League.

Yet the Catalan giants will likely enter this match without the talismanic Lionel Messi, who is struggling with a calf injury. In his probable absence, Valverde will hope the likes of Griezmann, Luis Suarez and Ousmane Dembele can carry the weight of their attack.
Bilbao finished in the top eight last season and will be looking to build on their achievements under head coach Gaizka Garitano. Forward Inaki Williams will be their best hope of troubling Barcelona’s defence.
