AC Milan v Roma
2021-22 Serie A, Matchday 20
Thursday 6 January 2022
San Siro, Milan
Kick-off at 18:30
AC Milan and Roma will have a heavyweight bout in Serie A when they meet at the San Siro on the evening of Thursday 6 January 2022, kick-off at 18:30.
Milan ended 2021 in second place on the log, four points adrift of city rivals Internazionale. The Rossoneri were last in action on December 22, claiming a 4-2 away win over Empoli thanks to goals from Franck Kessie (two), Alessandro Florenzi and Theo Hernandez.

“We were Winter Champions last season and didn’t win the Scudetto, so it’s all wide open,” said Milan coach Stefano Pioli after the win over Empoli. “We weren’t coming off some good results, even if I remain convinced we didn’t deserve to lose against Napoli, and needed this boost. Now we can rest a little easier and prepare for a tough January.”
Roma find themselves in sixth place on the log – six points off the Champions League places – though they will have been disappointed at ending off 2021 with a 1-1 draw at home to Sampdoria in which Eldor Shomurodov put the Giallorossi ahead, only to ship a late equaliser to Manolo Gabbiadini.

“It’s very difficult to play against a team that doesn’t want to play, who did well to take their point, but for the game it’s our fault for lack of quality and their fault for attitude,” said Roma coach Jose Mourinho. “There were difficulties at all levels. The team didn’t concentrate to the maximum, it was difficult to catch the highest lines, lost balls, little initiative. Only Zaniolo played with intensity and responsiveness.”
In head-to-head stats, Milan and Roma have met in 59 matches across all competitions since 1993, with the Rossoneri claiming 21 wins compared to 19 for the Giallorossi, while 19 games have been drawn.
When the teams met in the league earlier this season, in Rome in October 2021, Milan claimed a 2-1 away win thanks to goals from Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Franck Kessie.
