Red Bull Racing's Sergio Perez is determined to bounce back from a poor showing in Imola when the Formula One season heads to
Monaco for the eighth Grand Prix of the season on Sunday, May 26.
The Mexican adopted a "risky strategy" for the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix after starting 11th on the grid due to not completing qualifying, opting for hard tyres to stay out longer on his opening stint.
However, Perez went across the gravel on lap 18 and suffered damage to his car which further impacted his race and he eventually had to settle for P8 after pitting on lap 38 to change to medium tyres.
The 34-year-old driver dropped to third in the standings, six points behind Ferrari's Charles Leclerc, who claimed P3 for his fourth podium of the year.
'Pecco' admitted P8 was the best he could have hoped for given the circumstances and believes it was an anomaly after finishing on the podium in four of the opening six races.
"Yeah, I think pretty much it was the maximum we could have achieved, given where we started," he said. "We risked it, we knew that it was a very risky strategy and the teams were not favouring that strategy.
"But we were dreaming a bit with the [possibility of a] Safety Car at the right point for us, and also I think it was really bad ... Going off, I was playing with the balance to try and protect a little bit the rear axle, and I just went straight into Turn 16.
"That meant that I feel like I picked up some damage, and that compromised also the race. I lost six, seven seconds, and that put me really close to people behind.
"I think we just had a one-off, even though the weekend has been strong all the way to quali. Unfortunately we just didn't manage to get a proper qualifying."
2024 Emilia Romagna Grand Prix results:
Winner: Max Verstappen - Red Bull Racing
Second Place: Lando Norris - McLaren
Third Place: Charles Leclerc - Ferrari
