Spurs bounced back from an opening weekend loss to Everton with a 5-2 thumping of Southampton. Star forward Harry Kane was involved in all five goals, scoring the last and assisting Son Heung-Min for the other four as the South Korean netted his first Premier League hat-trick.
Head coach Jose Mourinho was suitably pleased with the way his team bounced back and with Gareth Bale waiting in the wings, the North London club sent out a real statement of intent.
“When you lose the first match, at home, you need somehow to try to compensate that,” said Mourinho “If somebody tells me before the game against Everton that after two matches, we have three points, I wouldn’t be happy at all. I would expect to have six, minimum four."
“So, the defeat against Everton was a bad result for us. It was of course very important to win the next match, and the next match was away, and everybody knows that away, Tottenham was without a victory for about one year. To lose to Everton and then go to Bulgaria and Southampton and get two victories was very important, a great answer from the boys.”
In contrast, Newcastle followed a 2-0 win over West Ham United with an embarrassing 3-0 loss at home to Brighton & Hove Albion.

The Magpies won the corresponding fixture last season 1-0 while Spurs defeated their opponents 3-1 in the most recent meeting between the two clubs at St.James's Park back in July.
