Breaking into the top tier of professional
boxing is one of the most difficult things to do. With competition for places very high, the chance of being considered one of the best in your specific weight class is an arduous task.
That said, some boxers take 10 years to reach their peak, but there are a handful that already start to standout from their peers at a younger age.
Betway has identified three up-and-comers who have all the potential to take the boxing world by storm over the next decade:
Devin Haney (24-0, 15 by knockout)
At just 21 years of age, Haney is already a star. The San Francisco-born boxer was only 17 when he turned bro five years ago.
After earning his stripes in Mexico, Haney received his United States boxing license in 2016 and hasn't looked back. He started 2019 with a 10th round win over South Africa's Xolisani Ndongeni before delivering one of the best knockout's of the year with his seventh round win over Antonio Moran.
'The Dream' followed that up with a dominating victory over Zaur Abdullaev in four rounds before edging past Alfredo Santiago in November to retain his WBC lightweight title. A dynamic fighter, Haney has often been touted as the next Floyd Mayweather and while he still has a long way to go before even being considered amongst the best pound-for-pound boxers in the world, the potential is evidently there for everyone to see.
Ryan Garcia (20-0, 17 by knockout)
Another exciting prodigy who fought his first few professional fights in Mexico, Garcia has all the right pieces to elevate himself onto being one of the world's greats.
Currently trained by Eddy Reynoso, who also trains Canelo Alavarez, the 21-year-old is promoted by Oscar De La Hoya's Golden Boy Promotions.
With the right blend of former and current greats in his corner, Garcia has the support system to mould himself into a dominant force. While that is all good, he still needs to do his job in the ring and so far he's not disappointed.
'The Flash' proved his prowess with a first round knockout of Romero Duno in November to claim the vacant WBC Silver lightweight title before retaining his crown with another first round knockout win, this time over Francisco Fonseca in February this year.
Teofimo Lopez (15-0, 12 by knockout)
Another exciting prospect, few boxers are as electrifying as the 22-year-old Brooklyn-born Honduran.
Lopez has all the speed and power to be considered as one of the brightest gems in the sport and having already claimed wins over more experienced boxers like Diego Magdaleno and most recently Richard Commey, he is ticking all the right boxes.
Victory over Commey in December handed him the IBF lightweight title and experts are already convinced that he could prove a real player in different weight-classes.
With a possible showdown against pound-for-pound king Vasiliy Lomachenko on the horizon, Lopez could well be elevated into the world spotlight sooner rather than later.
